THE CIVITAS NEWSLETTER - JUNE/JULY

What a summer it’s been at Civitas and it looks like the weather is sticking around for a little while yet! ☀️

There’s A LOT to catch up on from the last couple of months, as well as plenty coming up as we head towards the end of summer and into autumn.

But first, a quick one for the parents…

KIDS IN THE GYM

The summer holidays have hit, the kids are at home and we completely understand that sometimes you need to get your session in and bringing the kids with you is the only way to make that happen.

We appreciate that it isn’t always possible to stick to our usual kids hours of 10:30–12:00 and 15:00–16:00. We’re parents too, so we understand!

All we ask is that if you do bring your child in outside of these hours, please make sure they stay off the gym floor and remain in the reception area.

This is purely about keeping your little ones safe while training is going on 🫶🏻

Thank you!

COMPS

We’ve had Civi’s competing in all sorts over the last couple of months, at competitions across the county and the country.

There are honestly too many of you to single everyone out, but a massive well done to everyone who has put themselves out there and tested their fitness outside the four walls of Civitas.

We love seeing it.

And there’s plenty more to come!

Next weekend we have a load of Civi’s heading to South West Regionals at Bath Uni.

Good luck to everyone competing, go and enjoy it! 🔥

SOME BIG CIVITAS CONGRATULATIONS

We’ve had some pretty major life events within the community recently!

A huge congratulations to Emilie and Sam on the safe arrival of baby Amelia ❤️

And another huge congratulations to Clare on the safe arrival of baby Eve Rose ❤️

And finally a huge congratulations to Steve on the safe arrival of baby Penny ❤️

We’ve also had weddings to celebrate! 🥂

Congratulations to Mary & Ash, Lewys & Cerys and Penny & Josh on tying the knot.

We wish all six of you every happiness for the future ❤️

🇺🇸 CIVITAS26

And then… we had our own competition.

CIVITAS26.

Our first time inviting other gyms to compete at Civitas in three years and what a day it turned out to be.

From a personal point of view, the biggest success wasn’t the workouts or the fitness on display. It was the atmosphere in the gym from start to finish.

We’ve travelled to plenty of competitions over the years and, let’s just say, sometimes there can be a little bit of tension 🤣

There was absolutely none of that here on July 4th.

Competitors supported each other, judges and volunteers were incredible, spectators brought the noise and the whole place felt exactly how we hoped it would.

It was the perfect showcase of the community we have at Civitas.

For that, we owe all of you a massive thank you. ❤️

SO… WHAT’S NEXT?

As summer starts to wind down and autumn approaches, we want to up our game and give you even more opportunities to stay accountable.

Autumn and winter can be a challenging time to stay consistent. The days get shorter, the weather gets worse and it becomes very easy to let your training and nutrition slide.

So we’ve got plenty coming up to keep you moving…

FREE FRIEND WEEK IS BACK!

Monday 14th September.

We love Free Friend Week because it gives people the chance to experience Civitas properly without any pressure or commitment.

So if you have a mate, family member or work colleague who keeps talking about giving CrossFit a go… this is their chance.

They can train with us for the entire week completely FREE.

And if they love it and decide they want to continue, they’ll get the opportunity to try their first month at a heavily discounted rate.

Even better…

You’ll earn 40% cashback too! 🤩

If you want your mates to come along, they MUST be signed up beforehand.

🥗 28-DAY NUTRITION CHALLENGE

As the kids head back to school, it might be time for the adults to get back into a routine too 😆

We’ll soon be announcing dates for our September 28-Day Nutrition Challenge.

We ran this at the beginning of the year and saw some brilliant results.

People saw improvements in:

• Weight

• Body composition

• Energy levels

• Training performance

• General nutrition habits

September is a great opportunity to draw a line under the summer, dial your nutrition back in and establish some good habits to carry you through winter and beyond.

More information coming very soon 👀

KIDS & TEENS CAMPS

We had a brilliant Teens Camp recently and there’s more to come next week, including another Teens Camp AND a Kids Camp!

KIDS CAMP

📅 Wednesday 13th August⏰ 10:30–12:00

Drop the kids off, get the shopping done, grab a coffee or simply enjoy 90 minutes of peace while we expend all their energy in the gym 😆

TEENS CAMP

📅 Wednesday 13th August⏰ 13:00–16:00

Three hours of training, challenges and fun in the gym 💪

PROGRAMMING AND WORKOUTS

You may have noticed that recently we’ve been spending time building some good baseline strength.

Most notably, we’ve been working on the Front Squat and Shoulder Press, alongside some longer, more aerobic workouts throughout the summer.

Now it’s time to put that strength to use.

We’re heading into more Olympic lifting focused phases, starting with testing our max Clean & Jerk tomorrow 👀

As we move away from some of the basic strength work in classes, Jonny will also be offering Small Group PT sessions designed to maintain and continue improving that baseline strength.

Keeping this work in your training won’t just make you stronger. It can also help keep you healthy, robust and better prepared as we get stuck into more Olympic lifting.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information on these sessions.

And as we move through autumn and towards the colder months, you’ll start to notice another change…

Workouts will gradually become shorter and more intense. 🔥

All roads ultimately lead towards preparing you for the CrossFit Open early next year.

PERSONAL TRAINING

You may have seen on social media and around the gym that people are getting some brilliant results from PT.

Classes will always be the foundation of what we do, but if there’s something specific you want to improve, PT is the quickest way to accelerate your progress.

Strength. Gymnastics. Olympic lifting. Conditioning. Technique.

Whatever it is, we can help.

We’ll also be running another Winter Throwdown this year 👀❄️

So if you already know there’s a movement or weakness you’re praying doesn’t appear… now might be a good time to sort it 😂

All of our coaches are available for PT, so speak to us and we can pair you with the right coach to help fast track those results.

FUEL YOUR TRAINING

You may also have noticed that reception now offers slightly more than just caffeine 😵‍💫

We’ve expanded our range of pre, intra and post workout options to help fuel your training and recovery.

We now have:

⚡ Celsius / Lucozade

⚡ NOCCO

⚡ Red Bull

🍫 Protein bars

Everything is self-service and can be paid for using the iPad at reception 🙌🏻

And, of course, we can still make you a coffee, hot or iced. ☕️🧊

Just ask 👊

ENJOY THE REST OF THE SUMMER

It’s been a brilliant summer so far at Civitas.

CIVITAS26, competitions, PBs, babies, weddings, camps and plenty of sweaty workouts in what has felt like sometimes unhealthy heat 😆

And there’s plenty more to come.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, enjoy your holidays, enjoy the BBQs and the beer gardens and as you already have been, keep finding that time to get in and train.

See you in the gym ❤️

MEMBER OF THE MONTH/S

Amy Schofield

What a few months Amy has had in the gym. Over June and July she got into 37 classes and her hard work is really paying off. After doing some group PT with a gymnastics focus Amy has been putting in extra work outside of classes and her progress has been amazing. Amy is now smashing through Rx toes to bar in workouts. Not only that, Amy is also an integral part of our early morning classes and a part of our community that we're very grateful to have. Congratulations Amy!
